The Valley of Castles Canyon is located within the Charyn National Park, on the northern side of the Katu Mountains. A very popular tourist destination, the Charyn Canyon Valley is a natural masterpiece. Wind and water erosion have sculpted the red sedimentary rocks into stunning architectural forms reminiscent of towers and castles arranged in a single row. A relict Sogdian ash tree grows in the canyon by the Charyn River. The ash trees were named after the Sogdians, who long ruled this section of the Silk Road.
